Finalist for Woollahra Council Design Excellence Awards

The Woollahra Senior Citizens Centre renovation project has been shortlisted for the inaugural Woollahra Council Design Excellence Awards.

The challenge:
The seniors centre was hard to access because of a very steep site, which effectively stopped older people using it. It is now a vibrant hub of community activity.

It’s an example of how a small, careful design intervention can reinvigorate an entire building.

This project features:

  • adaptive reuse of the existing centre
  • retrofitting for accessibility ( a lift, on street bus parking and level access) a challenging constraint, because of the steep site
  • building an outdoor eating area, that preserves a significant tree and opens the eating area to its beautiful park location

Here just small but well thought out additions to the community centre building have had an exponential effect on the life of the centre.
